Overview
Cube-IQ allows you to cap the total volume of hazardous materials loaded into a single container or carton. This is managed using Q-values, which ensure shipments remain compliant with hazmat regulation limits.
Requirements
You must have any currently supported version of Cube-IQ installed on your computer with a valid license, or be logged in to Cube-IQ Web.
Procedure
How Q-Values Work
A Q-value is a decimal assigned to a hazardous item that represents its proportion of the maximum allowable hazmat limit per container.
The combined Q-value sum of all products in a single container cannot exceed 1.0.
Once the total reaches 1.0, Cube-IQ automatically splits the remaining items into additional containers.
Assign a Q-value to Hazardous Products
- Click the top left menu.
- Click Products.
- Navigate to a hazardous Product.
- Click Other data.
- Enter a value between 0.0 and 1.0 in the Q-value field.
Example Scenario
Without Q-Values (Default Behavior)
A load containing 4 Green and 9 Purple hazardous products will pack into 1 single container, regardless of total regulation limits.
With Q-Values Applied
Suppose we assign the following Q-values:
Green Product:
0.3Purple Product:
0.2
Cube-IQ will calculate the combined load limit per carton as follows and automatically split the order across 3 cartons:

Carton 1: 5 Purple Products
Calculation: (0.2 x 5) =1.0

Carton 2: 2 Green Products + 2 Purple Products
Calculation: (0.3x 2) + (0.2 x 2) = 0.6 + 0.4 =1.0

Carton 3: 2 Green Products + 2 Purple Products
Calculation: (0.3 x 2) + (0.2 x 2) = 0.6 + 0.4 =1.0
Carton 2 and 3
By enforcing a maximum Q-value sum of 1.0 per carton, Cube-IQ ensures all containers meet safety compliance standards automatically.
