Overview
This article explains the L-shape product type in Cube-IQ and how it behaves during optimization. This shape type is typically used to represent asymmetrical items like sofas, which can be rotated and nested in special ways to improve packing density.
Requirements
- Cube-IQ version 5.1 or higher.
Product Information
1. Selecting the L-Shape Product Type
- Open the Products tab or press F5.
- Click on the Shape tab.
- From the shape dropdown, choose L-Shape.
The L-Shape is a special 3D product shape used for objects like sofas (viewed from the side), which cannot be represented well by simple box dimensions. Selecting this shape type activates two additional fields:
- Back Depth: Distance from the back edge to the upright section of the “L”.
- Seat Height: Vertical distance from the lower part of the L to the floor.
2. Orientation Rules for L-Shapes
Unlike boxes or cylinders, L-shaped products follow more complex orientation logic due to their asymmetry. Cube-IQ supports the following behavior:
- Each valid orientation corresponds to a different side the L-shape can rest on.
- If rotation options 1 (On feet) and 2 (Upside Down) are both allowed, Cube-IQ can stack one sofa upside down on top of another.
- Option 3 or 4 (On left side or On right side) leads to the same combined shape as certain rotated positions, enabling efficient stacking.
- Allowing multiple orientations can increase packing density by enabling nesting of L-shapes.
- If upside-down loading is enabled, Cube-IQ may use this to improve utilization.
3. Nesting Behavior
- Cube-IQ’s optimizer recognizes the shape geometry and can nest L-shaped products together.
- Nesting helps improve volume utilization, especially for large asymmetrical furniture items.
- Orientation permissions and nesting logic work together to ensure optimized, realistic placement.
